West Indies has taken Naples by storm
The expression “British West indies” derived from the British colonies established in Caribbean islands and territories, Bahamas, greater and lesser Antilles in colonial times during 18th to 19th century. During the Victorian era, the reaches of British Empire expanded around the globe. The subsequent lifestyle in those territories, emphasized an amalgam of British and local elements, which mixed well with the current assorted qualities of foreign adornment choices. Designed to withstand the roughness of travel and local climate conditions, West indies design was informal inside a traditional British structure, and numerous current styles also mix casual and conventional components.
In times before air conditioning, colonial homes depended on a symmetrical layout that distributed cool breeze from exterior to all the rooms in the house. Plenty of gabled windows, large balconies, wainscoting walls and vaulted beamed ceilings, inspired by Caribbean plantation homes. Invitation to relax with its casual atmosphere with a large porch furnished with foldable chairs to cool down in the evening at the breeze of the ocean. Color palette mostly stays in a range of pastel colors: beige, cream, taupe and even turquoise to enhance the island lifestyle of Florida.
Decor inspired in west indies style is very ample, ranging from tropical objects to safari elements like, for instance, a zebra rug. Colonists added native accents from local cultures adapted for more humid climates during the British colonies. Dark mahogany and rattan furniture give more refined, yet casual look. Tropical fruits like pineapple are often reproduced in furniture custom legs, arm and posters. Maritime adorns are also commonplace, vintage steamer trunks and old ship models, nautical pendant lights and ceiling fans featuring hand woven wicker blades are a signature of colonial plantation style.
